Invergarry - the Heart of the Highlands
So convenient, so peaceful
Invergarry nestles centrally in the vast unspoilt natural expanse of the Scottish Highlands surrounded by the lochs, rivers, mountains and glens that draw visitors from all over the world. The village is well placed between Inverness and Fort William, with all the necessary amenities typical of rural villages across Scotland. Citylink buses run between Inverness and Fort William on the A82 trunk road within walking distance whilst a local taxi service thrives in the village. Steeped in history, local attractions abound, from local artesans and craft galleries to the ruined Invergarry Castle, where Bonnie Prince Charlie took shelter. Glengarry Heritage Centre is around a mile from Invergarry on the main A87 road and gives a good insight into the rich local history of the Glengarry area.
Outdoor fun is the order of the day, whether taking in the superb scenery or getting stuck into the amazing range of activities on offer: Highland safaris, mountain biking, climbing, walking, white water rafting & kayaking, hunting shooting & fishing, even water skiing. Winter sports fans are spoilt, with the Cairngorms and Nevis Range all within reach for a day on the slopes. Fishing and of course salmon fishing are part of the fabric of life here while golfers can indulge the 9 hole course at nearby Fort Augustus, where a range of local and mainstream shops can also be found..
The more sedate can try a leisure boat on the Caledonian Canal and Loch Oich , or explore the sea shores of nearby Loch Duich or Loch Hourn. Professional and amateur photographers and artists capture a breathtaking vista from the viewing area above Loch Garry, where a quirk of the vantage point makes the loch assume a familiar shape well known as the "map of Scotland".
Foodies are spoilt, with good food served both locally and further afield. The historic Invergarry Hotel serves good food and bar snacks all day. Nearby Glengarry Castle Hotel is a country house located in its own wooded grounds on the banks of Loch Oich and offers an evening set menu which changes daily, while in the other direction Tomdoun Sporting Lodge offers excellent seasonal fare. Further afield there are scores of inns, hotels and hunting lodges, both in Fort Augustus and around the countryside, usually featuring good locally sourced ingredients.
